Maria Spadafora

Education and Participation Coordinator

I enjoy developing different activities and projects as a way of engaging people, building their skills and confidence, and promoting wellbeing. I have a considerable background in developing and managing arts projects that promote social inclusion and give people opportunities to express themselves.

Over the last 20 years I’ve worked in a variety of roles, learning a lot from each job and the many people I’ve worked with. I love  working with different communities and am passionate about creative projects – using art as a tool for expression, documentation, entertainment and empowerment.

My work history:

1994-1998            Community Filmmaker

1997-2002           Course Coordinator for a Cert HE Film and Video Production,
accredited by Leeds Metropolitan University

2003-2009          Arts Outreach Officer at Square Chapel Centre for the Arts in Halifax

2009-2012           Volunteer Coordinator, Batley Resource Centre

2012-2015            Community Engagement Officer, South Asian Arts UK

I also freelance as a Photographer, specialising in live events, performance and documentary. Recent work includes various events for Yorkshire Festival in the run up to the Grande Depart, Morley Literature Festival and West Indian Carnival in Leeds.

I love music and present a montly radio show with Buffet (we like to put on a spread) on Bradford Community Broadcasting. My teenage son finds me highly embarrassing, which is as it should be, I reckon.
