FS Blog 2

Co-Artistic Directors, Aisha Khan and Alex Chisholm are delighted to announce that Kash Arshad will be joining Freedom Studios as a Trainee Artistic Director. Kash is joining us through the Artistic Directors Leadership Programmeand we are look forward to being able to support and develop a more diverse leadership for the future and work alongside a number of inspiring and innovative companies. In addition to having a Trainee Artistic Director, Freedom Studios will be running an Introduction to Directing course and hosting a three month placement for an emerging director. The programme has been made possible through a successful Arts Council England Sustain Consortium bid; other partners of which are Tiata FahodzaiTalawa and 20 Stories High, supported by RTYDS throughout this two year period.

With Freedom Studios Kash will be working on our Artist Development Programme, supporting emerging actors, directors and writers, and will direct his own production for the company in 2019. He is currently directing two monologues for Royal Exchange Manchester as part of Come Closer: Memories of Partition, and assistant director to David Thacker on ‘The Threepenny Opera’ at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton.

Most recently Kash has worked as an Assistant Director on Handbagged at Theatre by the Lake and directed Vinay Patel’s Free Fall for his own company Rogue Bones as part of the Manchester Fringe Festival. His work includes Assistant Trainee Director on Romeo and Juliet at West Yorkshire Playhouse. He was Associate Director on North Country for Freedom Studios, and completed the RTYDS 3 Month Placement as Assistant Director on #ChipShoptheMusical (Freedom Studios/Bolton Octagon).

Other directing includes, ‘My Mum the Racist’ (SL Shorts, Slung Low Hub), ‘Destiny Does as Sh’s Told’ and ‘Cob’ (Manchester ADP, Kings Arms), ‘The Big Reveal’ (Abooo Theatre, HOME), ‘Tactics and Cravings’ (Hercules Productions, Wonder Inn), Fat Penguin or Chubby Polar Bear (Finecomb Theatre, Theater Arlecchino, Basel).  He was also Assistant Director on an award winning new adaptation of Kafka’s ‘The Trial’ for People Zoo Productions, for the Greater Manchester Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe. Kash co-runs Rogue Bones Theatre Company, who recently performed at Paines Pough’s Roundabout and produced Vinay Patel’s Free Fall as part of the GM Fringe.

‘I’m stupidly excited to be the Trainee Artistic Director for Freedom Studios. All I’ve ever wanted was to run a theatre company, and now I’m being given the chance to learn how to do just that from Alex and Aisha, to whom I am eternally grateful for the opportunities they have given me. I’m humbled to be a part of this scheme. Increasing the diversity in the leadership of British Theatre seems more important than ever and I’m honoured to be given this chance to change and inspire.’
