Do you write? Would you like to write a play but just don’t know where to begin?

Freedom Studios will host an 8 week ‘Introduction to Playwriting Course’ this Spring and we would love to hear from creative writers who would like to have a first go at playwriting. Interested applicants must be 18 or over with little or no experience of writing for theatre (the screen or the stage). As a Bradford based theatre company we welcome applications from writers based in Bradford and the West Yorkshire area.

In this 8-week course, we’ll be focusing on the basics of theatre writing including; character, story, structure, plot development, writing realistic dialogue and theatricality.

The course will be run by Theatre writer May Sumbwanyambe; an award winning playwright from Edinburgh who is currently writing new stage plays, radio plays and films for the National Theatre of Scotland and the BBC. He is a lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Northumbria University, Associate lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University and is a PhD candidate at the University of York.

To apply, please send an email (to hello@freedomstudios.co.uk), telling us a bit about yourself, any writing that you may have done (your current writing practice), what you hope to gain from the course, where you are based and why this opportunity is important to you.

Deadline for applications: Friday 29th May 2020

Workshops will take place via Zoom from 7 – 8.30pm on the following dates from June to July 2020.

Mon 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th June

6th, 13th, 20th July

3rd August 2020

Should social distancing measures be lifted before or during the running of the course sessions may then take place at Freedom Studios, Bradford. (In consultation with participants and the course tutor).
