New Chair of Freedom Studios!

FS New Chair

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Anj Handa as Chair of the Board. She replaces Interim Chair, Nick Ellwood, who continues as Vice-Chair.

She is a Fellow of the RSA and a Founder of Inspiring Women Changemakers, a dynamic network of women leaders who come together to create positive social change. As an experienced Non-Executive Director and Diversity expert, Anj brings a wealth of Governance and Equality knowledge and contacts to Freedom Studios.

Anj says “I’m so passionate about the Arts in its varied forms. Theatre enables people to express their fears and pain, hopes and longing and it can bring individuals from different backgrounds together in a way that other community harmony initiatives sometimes struggle to achieve.

As a British Indian woman, it has long frustrated me that many from my own community, and indeed from other communities, have proportionately low engagement with the Arts, either as consumers or as professionals within the sector. Something needs to change.

I’m committed to ensuring the amazing diversity of Bradford is better reflected at all levels – within our leadership, our artist base and our audiences. Freedom Studios will achieve this by continuing to offer quality, edgy productions which include local talent and by introducing new digital innovations to reach out further.”

Artistic Co-Directors Alex Chisholm and Aisha Khan say: We are delighted that Anj is joining Freedom Studios to lead and support the next stage of our development.

These are challenging and exciting times for Bradford and for theatre, and we look forward to working together to nurture new artists and create more great art with and for all our communities.”

Anj is joined by new Trustees Rodolfo Barradas and Kamran Rashid FRSA.
