Artistic Director Leadership Programme
“Who is curating the culture? Predominantly it is white, middle-class men.” David Oyelowo
How many people of colour are running publically funded theatre organisations in England? Not many. It’s time for a change.
We know that representation matters. We know difference leads to innovation, surprise, challenge, and originality.
Like David Oyelowo, we believe that to achieve this diversity – of art, artists, workforce and audience – it must begin at the top.
Artistic Director Leadership Programme is a training programme for future theatre leaders. The programme is open to people of colour who want to be artistic leaders.
The progamme is delivered by tiata fahodzi, Freedom Studios, Talawa Theatre Company and 20 Stories High and supported by the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (RTYDS) and Independent Theatre Council (ITC).
In collaboration with RTYDS we have run 3 Month Placements for emerging directors, who want to gain valuable experience on professional productions. Previous recipient of that placement was Kash Arshad, who is our current Trainee Artistic Director. We have also run Introduction to Directing courses, supported by RYTDS. We plan to run two more of these in 2018/19. These courses are aimed at people who want to gain an insight into what it means to be theatre director.
