Writers Studio Group

Freedom Studios is offering a brand-new, free playwriting course, the Writers Studio Group for aspiring playwrights based in Bradford or the surrounding areas. We want to find new, original and distinctive voices from our region who are interested in writing for the stage. To do this we are offering an opportunity to be part of a friendly and supportive group, learn new writing skills, explore new ideas and get expert advice from leading industry professionals.

The Writers Studio Group is an introductory course, so you may have had some previous experience in writing for the stage, you may have had some experience in writing in other forms, you may be a theatre maker wanting to expand your practice or you may not have any previous experience at all. What we do ask of group members is that they are serious about developing themselves as playwrights, have a desire to tell new contemporary stories and are passionate about making their voices heard.

The Writers Studio Group will consist of 10 sessions and will cover the foundations of writing for the stage as well as guiding you through the process of writing a short play. The course will also shed light on how the theatre and creative industries work, as well as encourage wider industry and peer network connections. There will also be an opportunity to have your work performed by professional actors as part of Freedom Studios, Bradford Voices Showcase.

The course will be led by Freedom Studios Creative Lead, Graeme Thompson and will have guest workshops led by BBC Writersroom, Vinay Patel (An Adventure – Bush Theatre, Murdered by My Father – BBC, Dr Who – BBC), Kamal Kaan (Amma – Tara Theatre, Winter Tale – Northern Broadsides, Aaliyah: After Antigone – Freedom Studios) Karim Khan (Brown Boys Swim – The North Wall, All Creatures – Ch5/PBS), and Hannah Kumari (Devi – देवी – Sky Arts, Eng-Er-Land – Edward Alleyn Theatre).

If there is a more accessible way for you to apply, please suggest at your earliest convenience and no later one week before the deadline. We will do our best to accommodate all.

• All applicants must be over 18 years old.
• All applicants must be based in Bradford or surrounding districts.
• The Writers Studio Sessions will take place in person or online for those who prefer.
