Freedom Studios: Past, Present, Future…
Welcome to Freedom Studios – we’re happy you dropped in.
Freedom Studios is turning 10 years old this year, and we’ve been looking back over a decade of work here in Bradford.
10 years of shows in unusual spaces – an empty mill, train station, fish and chip shops, an abandoned food hall.
10 years of making opportunities for young people from Bradford to discover their voices and unleash their talent.
10 years of launching new creative careers of extraordinary new talent. People like Asif Khan, Zodwa Nyoni, Lena Kaur, Ben Tagoe, Kamal Kaan.
And we want to pay tribute to all the people who have made this possible – Kully Thierai and Kate Chapman who started Asian Theatre School 20 years ago; Wendy Harris and Rod Dixon who nurtured it at Red Ladder; Madani Younis who led the company from 2001 and made it Freedom Studios in 2007; Deborah Dickinson who ran the company until we took over in 2015. All the actors, writers, administrators, associate artists, volunteers, teachers, friends that have played their part in our journey to here. Working long hours, in strange places, the often unseen, unsung work that makes art, and fun, and creativity possible.
We want to celebrate all that work, and all those people, who have made us who we are today.
More than that, we want to look forward to the future. We live in troubled, and troubling, times and we want to use theatre to bring people together, overcome prejudice and misunderstanding, help make Bradford a more vibrant and harmonious society.
With you we want to do more, create more shows, and take them to more people, enable more new artists, from every part of Bradford, reach more young people with opportunities to unleash their talent.
On the blog we’ll be regularly sharing ideas, tips, thoughts and work in progress from us and the people we work with. Let us know if you have ideas that you would like to see or want to share.
And we’d love your support. If you can give money than that helps us HUGELY – even the price of a couple of cups of coffee a month can make a big difference. And for a limited time only for every penny you give, the Arts Council doubles your money! You can support us by using the donate button below or checking out the support us section.
And if you don’t have that, and we know times are tough, then we’d love it if you could come and join us by taking part, or giving us your ideas, stories and hopes for Bradford.
We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Alex, Aisha and all at Team Freedom.
